There are a number of studies showing that children and teenagers can feel just as much stress about school and homework as doe adults about work and other things in life. But even with these studies there is very little being done to show young people how to deal with homework related stress. Here are five tips to help you or your child deal with stress:

Know the signs of homework-related stress:

The first tip you should follow is identifying when you might be feeling pressure that is related to the schoolwork that is assigned to you. You may notice that you are falling behind in class, that you aren’t doing well on quizzes, that you’re losing sleep or experiencing something else that affects your daily life. Identify any changes in your routine and you might get a hold of the problem early on.

Master time-management skills:

Time-management is a skill one must absolutely have in today’s academic world. It might be a good idea to get a planner and keep it organized with all of your take home assignments each week. Break up large assignments into smaller tasks that are easier to manage and cross of your list. Don’t wait to work on a long paper the night before it’s due. It should be started earlier in the week and preferably starting from the moment you receive the assignment details.

Evaluate whether you’re over-scheduled:

Take a look at just how long it takes you to complete your assignments. You might be feeling too much stress because you might actually be overworked. As you get into the upper grades there are fewer teachers who communicate with one another, and this can sometimes lead to excessive individual assignments that take too long to complete. Once you start falling behind in one class a sort of domino effect can take place and you can fall behind several others.

Get more sleep, exercise, and regular meals:

When people experience stress they find that things like sleep, exercise and even eating healthy meals become difficult to maintain. In order to combat the pressures of take home assignments one must get proactive and work towards getting each of these things back on track. Make sure you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep, get regular daily exercise and eat regular healthy meals.

Watch out for outside familial pressures:

Many students are hesitant to let their family members know about the pressure they feel with their take home school work. Sometimes parents unknowingly set unrealistic goals or expectations that work against students’ confidence and concentration. As a student if you feel your parents might be putting pressure on you be sure to make them aware of your position and situation. Work on a plan and remind them that you need to succeed.
